FAQs
IS HAILEYBURY SAFE?
Haileybury is a small, self-contained campus, located in the small village of Hertford
Heath - a very safe environment for young people. There is a shop on site, so
students can buy most of what they need without leaving the school. At night, the
school is protected by a security patrol, and all gates are locked at 2300 hours. All of
our staff live on site so there are always people around to help if you have a
problem.
IS THE FOOD GOOD — AND IS THERE ENOUGH OF IT?
The catering at Haileybury is particularly varied and of good quality — remember,
Haileybury is a prestigious private school all year round, with students from many
different countries and cultures living here. There are 3 well-balanced meals a day,
with healthy options at each meal, and a light supper before you go to bed. Students
need to play their part too, by being open to new tastes and dishes. This is all part
of getting the most from the Haileybury experience.
HOW WILL I IMPROVE MY ENGLISH?
Apart from the 20 lessons of formal classes each week, which focus strongly on
spoken English, you will be mixing with students from other countries as well as your
own. You will communicate with your new friends in English, as you play sport and
go on trips with them, and also when you work together to produce an end-ofcourse
project show for your international team.
Most students find their confidence in English improves considerably during the stay.
We usually have 18 different nationalities represented in the school so it is important
that you arrive with an open mind, make friends with other nationalities and practice
your English as much as possible.
WHAT WILL MY ACCOMMODATION BE LIKE?
Each boarding house at Haileybury has a mixture of rooms, including multi-bedded
dormitories, and single and double rooms. Younger students enjoy more
companionship in the dormitories, whilst older students are allocated single or
double rooms. There are also a limited number of 3 or 4-bedded rooms in some
houses.
Each house has modern bathroom and shower facilities, which are shared by all the
students, and are available for use throughout the day. A number of staff live in
each house with the students.
We have separate houses for girls and boys. Students are allowed to visit each
others common rooms but not bedrooms.
WHAT INTERESTING PLACES WILL I SEE?
Our 3-week programme includes 3 full-day trips to London, involving visits to the
wonderful Science and British Museums, many places of interest, and enough
supervised free time for present-shopping. There are also full-day visits to
Cambridge and Windsor and half-day visits to St Albans and Hertford, with optional
days out at extra charge to Brighton, Warwick, London again and Thorpe Park
amusement park.
WILL MY VALUABLES BE SAFE?
When you arrive at the school you must give us your passport, tickets and pocket
money. We put them in the school safe and you can have access to your pocket
money each day. Student rooms at Haileybury are not lockable, but students bring a
lockable suitcase with them. You are strongly advised not to bring valuables with
you as ISC will not take responsibility for them, unless you leave them in our safe
keeping.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I BREAK ANY SCHOOL RULES?
Students are asked to sign a student agreement upon enrolment, agreeing to
behave properly during the course. There are few rules at Haileybury and all are
commonsense, such as no bullying or anti-social behaviour, no drugs, alcohol,
smoking on site. Students who break these rules may be sent home at their parents’
expense.
Similarly, we will not tolerate verbal or physical abuse of Haileybury staff, our staff
or other students. Part of our responsibility for the safety of each student involves
ensuring that every student is treated well and fairly by everyone else attending or
connected with the school.
If you damage any property, you will be asked to pay for the repair before you
leave. We require a damages deposit of £20 from you on arrival. This will be
returned at the end of the course if there is no damage.
WILL I BE MET AT THE AIRPORT ON ARRIVAL?
A member of staff or one of our drivers will be waiting for you in the Arrivals lounge,
holding an ISC sign. They will accompany you to the school or put you with other
students to travel with them.
On departure, we will take you to the airport terminal. Alternatively, we offer a
‘check in service’ or ‘unaccompanied minors service’ at extra cost, which
must be booked in advance.
WHAT ABOUT MY LAUNDRY?
We offer a personal laundry service once a week at an extra charge of £5 for 2 small
laundry bags – one for whites and one for coloured clothes. Bed linen is changed
once a week (included in cost). Please note you should bring your own towels for
showering and swimming – these are not provided by the school.
HOW CAN I BE SURE OF THE QUALITY OF ISC COURSES?
ISC is accredited by the British Council and is inspected regularly. The BC
Accreditation Scheme assesses the standards of management, resources and
premises, teaching and welfare. Accredited organisations have to meet the overall
standard in each aspect of what they offer.
We are also members of EnglishUK, the world's leading language teaching
association and this provides you with a further guarantee of high quality and good
service. In fact, students can appeal to English UK if they are dissatisfied with the
way a school deals with a complaint.
