Student Information sheet

Welcome!

We are delighted you will be joining us this summer and look forward to meeting you. It is important that you are well prepared before you arrive in England so please read the following information carefully.

1. The College
• Haileybury is a well known independent school located 25 miles north of London, just outside the town of Hertford. You will be accommodated in one of the school’s boarding houses with other students and our teaching staff.

• You will have breakfast, lunch and dinner in the school dining hall and supper in your boarding house. Lessons are held in the nearby classrooms. You will also have use of extensive sports facilities on site including a modern sports hall, an indoor heated swimming pool, tennis courts, football pitches, a theatre, disco room and meeting rooms. The campus is quite large but all facilities are within 5 minute’s walk of your boarding house. A small shop is open each day for you to buy snacks and cold drinks.

2. The programme
• You will have 15 hours/20 lessons of English language tuition each week (or 20 hours /26 lessons if you choose the intensive programme in August). Lessons will cover General English, British Culture and the ISC project and will be delivered by our qualified teachers. You will be allocated to a team for your project and activities and awarded points for good work.

• After lessons, you will have a choice of activities including sport, arts and crafts, competitions and games. Every evening there are activities arranged for you such as discos, games evenings, tournaments and barbecues. Two or three times a week we will go to visit local places of interest, for example London, Cambridge, St Albans or Hertford. You will be accompanied by our trained staff on all activities.

• Your project lessons lead up to the Project Show, which takes place in the theatre at the end of the course. The projects will be judged and team points awarded for the best ones.

• There will be students from many countries for you to make friends with. This gives you an exciting opportunity to learn about each other’s cultures as well as British culture. As part of this, we ask you to prepare a presentation about some aspect of your country for our International Evening. It could be dancing, singing or anything else you would like to show us. Please think about this before you come.

• Sunday is a lesson-free day. Optional excursions can be arranged for an extra charge. If you want to go on these excursions, please bring enough pocket money to cover the cost, which is £15-£35 per trip.

An internet room is available to students at fixed times each day for a small charge.

3. What to bring with you:
• pens and paper for lessons
• towels for showering and for swimming
• soap and any other toiletries you need
• sports clothes and white soled trainers for use in the sports centre
• a passport photo
• comfortable walking shoes for excursions
• sports equipment, if you want to use your own (equipment is provided by the school if not)
• rain-proof jacket and warm sweater
• things you need for your contribution to the International evening
a plug adapter – the UK uses 240v.
• a sensible amount of clothes - remember you will have to carry your own bags on arrival and departure. A laundry service will be available during the second and third weeks of the course for a small charge.
• spending money. Students usually bring between £50-£100 per week but as all students have different needs, we leave it up to you to decide.

4. Important information
• As you are sharing your accommodation with others, we ask you to respect their needs by not making noise, especially at night. All students must be in their bedrooms and quiet by 23.00 every night.
• Bathrooms and common areas are cleaned every day. Bedrooms are cleaned and linen changed once a week. Please keep your bedrooms tidy.
• On arrival, you will be asked to pay a damages deposit of £20/€30. This will be returned to you at the end of your stay, if you have not caused any damage to school property.
• Your travel tickets, passports, spending money and other valuables will be kept in our safe. Please make sure your insurance covers you for loss or theft, as the school will not be liable. There are no locks on the bedroom doors - some students bring a suitcase with a lock so they can leave valuable items in their room.
• Any students found drinking alcohol, taking drugs or committing an act of gross misconduct (eg bullying, repeated rudeness or racist behaviour)is liable to be removed from the campus immediately and sent home at their parents’ expense.
